Games of Future Past: Tips to Plow Through that Pile of Shame

Every gamer undoubtedly has a pile of shame, a list or actual pile of games that they just haven't gotten around to playing.  Gaming takes time and very few people are able to play every game that they want to.  Until recently I have been very busy with college work, jobs, ect... but I've recently come into a little bit of free time, so into my pile of shame I have plunged:

  • Batman Arkham Asylum
  • Dante's Inferno
  • Modern Warfare 3
  • Splinter Cell Conviction
  • Deus Ex Human Revolution
  • Fallout 3
  • Fallout New Vegas
  • Bioshock
  • Bioshock 2
  • Bioshock Infinite
  • Borderlands
  • Borderlands 2
  • Skyrim
  • Dead Island
  • GTA 5
  • Batman Arkham City
  • Dead Space 2
  • Dead Space 3
  • Mass Effect
  • Mass Effect 2
  • Mass Effect 3
These are the games that I own that I plan on playing through, but there are even more games that I want to finish that I haven't bought yet.  Some of these games are short, some are ridiculously long (Looking at you Skyrim, Fallout 3, and Fallout New Vegas), so what's a gamer with some free time and a crazy long list of shame to do!?

The Tips:
  1. Play Games on Easy or Normal.  Yes, it can hurt your delicate gamer ego to have to play a game on easy, but it will drastically lower the play time so you can go through the story quickly, and if you enjoyed it more than you thought you can always go back and play it on expert for those oh so valuable achievements and trophies.
  2. If you aren't enjoying the game, just put it down.  Sure, you may have heard amazing things about the Dead Space series for the better part of the previous generation, and now that you've gone out and bought all three games you're ready to have the horror experience of a lifetime.  But wait... Oh no... What to do if you don't like it?  Sometimes you just have to admit that the game isn't for you, swallow your dose of disappointment and move on to your next adventure. (Disclaimer: I love the Dead Space series, not taking shots at the series, it's just a good example.
  3. Take genre tolerance breaks.  I find that its easier to play through a large number of games if I switch it up.  After I finished Batman Arkham Asylum I really wanted to play the sequel, Arkham City.  So I got the game, popped it in and I realized how burnt out I was on the style of game play.  After spending around 10 hours playing Arkham Asylum I just couldn't play any more in that universe, so I switched over to playing Grand Theft Auto 5.  It helps to alternate so you don't inadvertently burn yourself out of your favorite games.
There you have it, some tips to burn through that pile of shame so you can move onto the next generation of gaming that much sooner.
